Audi
A company that now has been in existence for just over 100 years, Audi continues to specialize in producing a variety of luxury cars and SUVs from it's manufacturing facilities in Ingolstadt, Germany.
In 1909 August Horch, in a dispute with the supervisory board of the company he founded, left the company to form Horch Automobil-Werke in the same city. Since he was legally prohibited from using his own last name, he choose the latin word for his last name, Audi, which means “hark” or “listen”. The new company Audiwerke GmBh was officially born on April 25th 1910. Audi operated independently until 1932 when it joined with 3 other German manufacturers to form what was then known as the Auto Union. As the other manufactures ceased operations, Audi was the sole survivor of that union when it was purchased in 1964 by Volkswagen
As you well know, every car maker has its shining moments and Audi was no different. Audi's came during the 1980 Geneva Motor show when it introduced the Audio Quattro. Using technology that had only been seen in trucks and off road vehicles, the Quattro was a high performance, all wheel drive sport coupe. Needless to say, the innovative design met with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. Moving forward, the Quattro's design helped Audi win accolade after accolade and the all wheel drive technology was soon incorporated into the whole Audi product line.
Although the Audi Quattro coupe ceased production, the name “quattro” is still the designation that Audi uses to name its all wheel drive system. Audi has continued to uphold it's philosophy of being innovators and on the leading edge of technology. A few examples of this is the use of aluminum space frame technology which significantly cuts down on a vehicles overall weight compared to the steel bodies that most companies utilize. The benefit to the end user is a car that has improved handling, faster acceleration, less noise and vibration for the occupants and most of all, especially in this day and age, less fuel consumption. It also incorporates what is known as continually variable transmissions (CVT's) which to many are known as smart transmissions.
To those that chose to drive an Audi, the overall experience is second to none. With elegant interiors that are superbly crafted, the cabin of an Audi is an experience in luxury that is a feast to behold. Audi firmly believes in using only the highest quality materials, even in the entry luxury models such as the A3 and the A4. For those that have the treat of driving the exquisite A8, it's an experience, almost sensual, of being surrounded at every turn with only the finest wood and leather known to man.
Although Audi has never gained the name recognition of some of its German counterparts, it's no secret among its legions of followers, that each vehicle offers just as much luxury and performance as its more widely known competitors. What's even more important, the luxury and performance of the Audi line will typically require a lower investment from the customer.
